By changing the size, configuration and appearance of windows, we make a change in the character and aesthetic appearance of the entire building. It’s no secret that there are no houses without windows, and there are no architectural objects for which their appearance is insignificant. The placement and size of window and door openings on the facade is part of the project.
Do we understand how important this moment is?
Can windows not decorate a house? Yes they can.
Let’s give some examples.
If, when designing window openings, they are placed along the facade thoughtlessly, chaotically, say, at different heights, then the impression of a general disorder will be created. If you design too small windows in the house, then outwardly the house will seem impregnable, large and awkward. Most often, this happens when small random windows are designed into the pantry, bathroom or landing in the side walls overlooking the neighbors, while not thinking about the aesthetics of this wall.
On the contrary, sometimes too large windows on the facade are laid in the project along with windows of a standard size, which leads to a general negative impression of the house, since in most cases the house begins to be associated not with a private building, but with some kind of public building. In some cases, windows with separated asymmetrical modules are installed, which is not at all suitable for traditional residential buildings. This is especially striking if paired windows are installed. In this case, a negative impression is created that the house seems to be looking at you, and not a very friendly “look”.
Another common mistake is the installation of large attic windows bordering in close proximity to the roof slope lines, which introduces some imbalance into the composition of the side wall of the facade. The above examples show how important it is to choose the right size and location of windows, their configuration and appearance.
It should also be understood that the ordered project of the house is an author’s development protected by law, and any changes to it, including changes in the location and size of windows, are prohibited from being unauthorized, any changes must be agreed with the architect, since even minor deviations from the approved project of the house can significantly affect its overall aesthetic appearance.
In most cases, the authors of mass-selling ready-made house designs agree in advance with a number of design changes, including these changes in a special specification. In this case, buyers are given more freedom of action, allowing them to adapt the project to different sites. But at the same time, it must be remembered that the elimination, transfer or addition of a window opening can, in the end, tell on the appearance of the whole house, in which case you take responsibility for this.
Do not forget also that changing the size and number of windows can significantly affect the structural features of the building and the total cost of construction work. The adaptation of the project must be carried out by a competent specialist who has the appropriate license to carry out this type of work, and he must at the same time maintain the main dominant principle of the composition of the facade.
So, for example, if the facade had a symmetrically ordered placement of windows, then when changing the placement of just one window, the entire composition will collapse. One of the important points is also the observance of the distances between window openings, between windows and the corner of the building, between window and door openings. When choosing the size and location of windows, it is necessary to take into account the level of natural light in the room, for which it is necessary to strictly observe the ratio of the area of window openings to the area of the room. Another factor that can negatively affect the aesthetic appeal of the facade of your house is the wrong material for window frames. People say that windows are the “eyes” of the house.
Indeed, when we look at the facade of the house, especially if the windows are arranged in pairs, then such an impression is created. If you install windows with asymmetric glass division in the house, then it will visually seem that the house seems to be skewed. Most often, these errors occur as a result of ill-conceived actions or haste when choosing windows, as well as as a result of the search for cheaper structural solutions.
Pay due attention to the location, size and configuration of window openings, as the overall attractiveness and aesthetics of the entire house will depend on this. Try to find compromise solutions with the architect at the design stage, so that later, at the construction stage, you don’t waste time, money and materials to satisfy your “whims”, because ill-conceived actions can cause unique damage to the appearance of your house.
