Brick sizes and standards.

To date, the bulk of building materials are produced according to certain standards and sizes. The dimensions of an ordinary brick are regulated by the state standard. Standardization simplifies and simplifies the work with the material, and the calculation of the amount of materials needed when designing a structure or any building. An important parameter is also the weight of the material in our case of a brick. There are no specific weight parameters according to the state standard. Everything will depend on what this or that brick is made of. Whether it is a hollow brick or solid, the number of voids as a percentage. The size of the material matters and it affects the weight of the product. Standardization of overall dimensions simplifies the work of the designer and makes it easy to calculate the design features of buildings, structures or various architectural elements. Knowing the weight will allow you to correctly calculate the load on the entire structure and, first of all, on the foundation. The standardization of dimensions and other characteristics of materials allows a wider range of materials and its supply from a larger number of suppliers. What sizes according to state standards are bricks now? There are the following standard sizes for all types of bricks, both facing and ordinary:

– Format 1NF is 250 mm. product length (it is the same for all types and formats), 120 mm. product width, 65 mm. product height. 1 NF is the basic format that is taken as a basis and further formats are repelled from it. A brick of this size is produced, both ordinary (general construction) and facing.

– Format 1.4 NF is 250 mm. long, 120 mm. width, 88 mm. product height. That is, the size of the product is 1.4 of the standard base format, as indicated above. This format also happens in an ordinary version and in the front version.

– Format 2.1 NF is 250 mm. long, 120 mm. width, 138 mm. height. This format is also called double, as a rule, these are blocks for rough masonry.

– Format 0.5 NF, 0.7 NF is 250 mm. long, 60.85 mm wide, 65 mm. height, such formats are used for facing products and are used for facing various buildings.

Thus, different formats of produced bricks can be used in specific cases. For example, a double block 2 NF is used to reduce the cost of masonry, speed up the construction process, and the 0.5 NF and 0.7 NF formats reduce the cost of building cladding and reduce costs during the construction process. It is common to call all formats: single brick, one and a half brick, double brick or block. The length and width are the same, only the height is different. It should be noted that various state standards provide for deviations from the linear dimensions of the finished product. The length may vary by ± 4mm, width ± 3 mm, height ± 2 mm. Such deviations are allowed on products of all formats. The weight of bricks is not regulated by standards, it all depends on the size, voidness, and manufacturing technology. The brick has one more parameter, it is divided into groups according to thermal characteristics, which depend on the density class of products: 2.0 – 2.4 – low efficiency, 1.4 – usually effective, 1.2 – effective, 1.0 – increased efficiency, 0.7 – 0.8 – high efficiency. Types of bricks depending on the structure:

  • Hollow (aka slotted) – the number of voids up to 40%. Advantages – light weight of the product, speed of installation and application. Disadvantages – possible low strength.
  • Conditionally full-bodied – the number of voids up to 14%. Advantages – lightweight product, quick installation and use.
  • Solid – completely monolithic brick with zero void content. The advantage is increased strength, breadth of use cases. Disadvantages – the large weight of the product.

For facing products, as a rule, the following formats are used: 0.5 NF, 0.7 NF, 1 NF, less often 1.4 NF. For facing products, format 2 NF is almost never produced. What is the weight of a brick? It all depends on the voidness, format, product size, manufacturing technology and many other parameters.

As a rule, all manufacturers and suppliers indicate the exact weight in their specifications and price lists. In some cases, the weight may differ slightly from the price lists and specifications, which is not critical. It should be noted that one of the subspecies of brick is refractory brick. It is mainly intended for use in the metallurgical industry, but this material is also used in civil engineering.

The primary area of application is the arrangement of the furnace parts of fireplaces, barbecues, barbecues and other structures that require sufficient fire resistance of the material. External masonry of such buildings is carried out with facing materials of various types, including facing bricks. The supply of brick products is mainly carried out on pallets. Usually these are wooden pallets of different sizes.

The number of bricks on a pallet is packaged differently. It depends on the purpose of the product, the scope. Facing materials, as a rule, are stacked on a pallet, tied with special fastening tapes, then there may be packaging film and other packaging and promotional material.

In addition to all other parameters, the main parameters of various types of brick products include:

  • Frost
  • resistance moisture absorption
  • Strength
  • Thermal conductivity

All parameters are important in the subsequent application of the brick.

As a rule, in the manufacture of ceramic bricks, the method of plastic molding and subsequent drying of the finished product are used. Drying and firing of bricks is carried out in different temperature conditions, the final technical parameters depend on this. It is also worth noting that there is a method of semi-dry molding followed by firing, this method is used only for ordinary bricks.

We wish you successful construction.
